How to get to London

By car

UWO driving directions, with a reasonable overview map of London. Coming from the east, I would take what they call the peripheral route (401 to Highbury to Oxford to ...). Or take 401 to Airport Rd to Oxford to ...

By plane

There are flights to London from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Sarnia, Detroit, Calgary, Vancouver and other cities. (Pittsburg?) The London airport webpage has further information. The London airport code is YXU.

The best way to get from London airport to hotels or campus is to take a taxi.

One can also fly to a nearby airport, such as Toronto or Detroit, and take ground transportation from there. Robert Q Airbus provides a shuttle service from these airports to various locations in London, for C$46-49 one way, C$71-82 return, plus a surcharge to be taken directly to a hotel or to campus. Schedules can be found on their webpage and they can be reached at 1 800 265-4948. They recommend booking ahead of time. It takes a bit more than two hours to get from the Toronto airport to London and around three hours from Detroit airport. Car rentals are also available at these airports, and driving is faster than the shuttle.

I've heard that there can be very cheap flights from Chicago to Detroit, although I don't know any details. There are now fast direct flights between Chicago and London.

Flying direct vs. ground transportation: It is usually cheaper to take ground transportation, although at least once I found it cheaper to fly to London via Toronto than to just fly to Toronto, so you should definitely check into both possibilities. Which alternative is faster depends on the connections; flying to London with a long stopover in Toronto will take longer than flying to Toronto and taking the shuttle bus or driving, but with a short stopover it will be faster.

By train

There is direct train service from both Toronto and Chicago to London. From downtown Toronto it takes almost exactly 2 hours, and from Chicago it takes about 8 or 9 hours. This is very reasonably priced, especially if booked five days in advance, and even more so if booked ten days in advance. More info is available from the Via rail website. Via can be reached by phone at 1-888-VIARAIL. There are also trains from Windsor, but I suspect it is not very convenient to connect between Detroit train station and Windsor train station.

Unfortunately, the train does not go to the Toronto airport.

By bus

Sometimes the bus runs more frequently than the train. See Greyhound Canada.

The math department

The Math department is located on the first floor of Middlesex College, which is on the east side of campus and is the unique building on campus with a clock tower. Here is a campus map. We can be reached at 519 661-3638.
